Career

A software engineer is a skilled professional focused on the design and creation of software. They may or may not actually code. Because they are interacting with both business functions and programmers, Software Engineers should have excellent communication skills and should enjoy working as part of a team. They will often have to explain business functions to programmers and technology restraints to non-technical business managers.

Educational Requirements

A career as a software design engineer generally entails a Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering. Alternatively, some enter this career by earning bachelor's degrees in related fields, such as computer science or computer information systems. Software engineering degree programs include such courses as software design, computer architecture, programming languages, networks and operating systems. They typically also require the completion of senior design projects.

Work Environment

Computer software engineers typically work in well-lit offices in comfortable surroundings or in computer laboratories. Most work at least 40 hours a week, but due to the project-oriented nature of the work, they may also have to work evenings and weekends to meet deadlines or solve unexpected technical problems. Like other workers who spend large amounts of time in front of a computer terminal typing at a keyboard, they are susceptible to eyestrain, back discomfort and hand and wrist problems. Many computer software engineers interact with coworkers and customers as they attempt to improve software for users.

Salary

Software Engineers, if in the field long enough, can make a total of about $100k - $120k a yeardepending on where the business is located and what company you are a part of.
